Filipina healthcare worker in Dubai survives brain surgery after tumor the size of a tennis ball removed

A Filipina healthcare assistant in Dubai has made a remarkable recovery after undergoing complex brain surgery to remove a massive tumor that had caused severe headaches, seizures, and vision problems.

Jovelyn Sison Omes, 41, who works at an aesthetic clinic, was rushed to Aster Hospital Mankhool after experiencing worsening symptoms, including nausea and a full-body seizure. On admission last November 27, 2024, doctors discovered a large non-cancerous brain tumor called a falcine meningioma — growing from the right side of her brain and crossing over to the other side, creating dangerous swelling and pressure.

“The tumor was comparable to the size of a tennis ball,” said Dr. Prakash Nair, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Aster Hospital, who led the operation. He described the location of the tumor as “challenging,” given its proximity to parts of the brain that control limb movement.

Despite having a history of asthma and high cholesterol, Ms. Omes was not on any maintenance medications and had no prior trauma. Her symptoms included constant headaches, double vision, confusion, and a seizure so severe it caused a tongue bite.

The day after her admission, Dr. Nair and his team performed a high-risk operation using a microscope and ultrasonic aspirator to remove the tumor. The procedure, classified as Simpson Grade 1 resection, meant the tumor and its roots were completely eliminated — significantly reducing the risk of it growing back.

Within 24 hours of surgery, Ms. Omes was off the ventilator and back on her feet. She responded well to therapy and was discharged on December 5. Follow-up scans showed no complications, and she has since returned to work without any neurological issues.

“This case highlights the importance of timely diagnosis and advanced neurosurgical care,” Dr. Nair emphasized. “The recurrence rate with a complete resection is less than 9% after 10 years, which bodes well for her long-term recovery.”

Now fully recovered, Ms. Omes shared an emotional message: “I’m incredibly thankful to Dr. Nair and the entire team for saving my life. I hope my story encourages others to seek help when something doesn’t feel right.”
