The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has issued a stern warning to public utility vehicle drivers who charge overweight or plus-sized passengers more than the standard fare.
The agency reminded drivers that fare policies apply to individuals — not their body size.
“Regardless of a passenger’s size, the fare covers one person,” said LTFRB Chairman Teofilo Guadiz III ina Philstar.com report. He emphasized that asking for additional payment based on a commuter’s weight is “not only unlawful, but discriminatory and unjust.”
The LTFRB confirmed receiving complaints from commuters who were reportedly overcharged simply for occupying more space. Guadiz underscored that such practices directly violate LTFRB regulations and basic human rights.
Erring drivers may face serious consequences, including fines or even suspension and revocation of their franchises.
The public is encouraged to report incidents of discrimination or overcharging by calling the LTFRB hotline 1342, messaging their official social media accounts, or emailing complaints@ltfrb.gov.ph.
