Senator Imee Marcos joins VP Sara Duterte in Qatar for OFW gathering

Senator Imee Marcos confirmed on social media that she is currently in Qatar alongside Vice President Sara Duterte to attend a gathering of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), calling it a “mahalagang pagsasama-sama” (significant get-together) for the Filipino community in the Gulf state.

The senator shared her joy not only in attending the event but also in reuniting with former Davao City First Lady Elizabeth Zimmerman, the mother of the Vice President. “Napakasaya ko rin makasamang muli ang Nanay ni Inday, Ma’am Elizabeth Zimmerman,” she wrote in a post made an hour ago.

The Qatar visit forms part of VP Duterte’s official overseas itinerary, which spans from May 26 to June 4, 2025. The vice president is engaging with OFWs in a series of Thanksgiving events, reaffirming her administration’s connection with the Filipino diaspora amid political developments back home.

Following her engagements in Qatar, Duterte is scheduled to proceed to the Netherlands to visit her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for trial over alleged human rights violations during his presidency. Her trip will include a peaceful rally organized by Filipino groups outside the ICC in The Hague on May 31—coinciding with her birthday.

The overseas trip comes just days before the Senate is set to begin impeachment proceedings against VP Duterte. The articles of impeachment, approved by the House of Representatives in February 2025, include allegations of the misuse of ₱612.5 million in confidential funds and controversial statements involving national security.

Despite the controversy, Duterte has signaled no signs of retreat from the political spotlight and is reportedly eyeing a presidential run in 2028.
