Driver in Good Friday tragedy freed on P500,000 bail in Bacolod

An Indian national linked to a tragic road accident during a Good Friday procession in Barangay Alangilan, Bacolod City, has posted bail following the issuance of an arrest warrant.

Jarpreet Singh, 37, returned to Police Station 5 on Wednesday, May 21, to settle a PHP500,000 bail in connection with charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, physical injuries, and property damage. His arrest warrant had been issued five days earlier.

Police Major Joeil Reclamado, station chief, confirmed Singh’s appearance and noted that he had earlier posted a separate PHP60,000 bail on April 22—just a day after charges were formally filed. “The first bail was for the inquest proceedings,” he clarified.

The case stems from a horrific crash on April 18, when Singh’s multi-purpose vehicle plowed into a religious crowd, killing three individuals and injuring 17 others, including two police officers.

Despite his temporary liberty, trial proceedings are now underway.

In addition, a separate case for alleged violation of the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act remains pending at the City Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities had earlier stated that Singh tested positive for alcohol. He claimed, however, that he had consumed alcohol as a form of pain relief.

Singh was reportedly with four fellow Indian nationals and had just come from a resort when the fatal incident took place.
