At least 45 dead as powerful storm and lightning lash northern India

A powerful thunderstorm accompanied by lightning strikes claimed the lives of at least 45 people across the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, local media reported.

The storm swept through the region with intense rain and strong winds, leaving behind a trail of destruction and grief. State authorities have moved swiftly, ordering immediate compensation to the families of the deceased. All divisional commissioners have been instructed to release financial aid within 24 hours.

In response to the widespread damage, local officials have been directed to conduct rapid assessments of crop losses. Reports will be used to determine further support for affected farmers.

Weather agencies have warned of continuing thunderstorm activity through Monday, particularly in central Uttar Pradesh and the Terai belt, with more rain and gusty winds expected.

The storm’s impact was not limited to humans. In Singhar village, Jhansi district, the local parrot population also suffered heavily. A large flock that resided in a ‘peepal’ tree near a temple was hit hard by the violent winds. District forest officer J.B. Shende confirmed that 70 parrots were found dead, with around 30 more injured and receiving care.
