Mother elephant refuses to leave dead calf after truck accident in Malaysia

A tragic and emotional scene in Malaysia has stirred hearts across the world, as a mother elephant stood motionless for hours beside her calf, who had been fatally struck by a truck.

The heartbreaking moment was captured and shared on Instagram by athlete AJ Pyro, who posted a video of the grieving elephant pressing her head against the truck responsible for the accident. The incident happened on Mother’s Day, adding a layer of poignancy to the already devastating loss.

From night until sunrise, the mother elephant remained by her calf’s side, seemingly overwhelmed by grief. Efforts to move her were unsuccessful, as she refused to abandon the spot where her baby had taken its last breath. A long line of vehicles reportedly built up behind the scene, but the mourning mother would not budge.

“A mother elephant was found standing beside her baby, who had just been fatally struck by a truck. The collision happened on Mother’s Day, turning a day of celebration into one of unimaginable grief,” Pyro wrote. “Silent tears streamed down her face as she mourned in stillness, holding on to a bond that not even death could sever.”
