Abu Dhabi registers most jaywalking fines as UAE records over 177,000 violations in 2024

Authorities across the UAE recorded a staggering 177,554 violations for jaywalking in 2024, highlighting a persistent and dangerous disregard for pedestrian safety. The latest figures from the Ministry of Interior show that pedestrians are frequently risking their lives by crossing roads from non-designated areas, often distracted by their mobile phones.

Abu Dhabi reported the highest number of jaywalking violations, with 109,260 cases, followed by Dubai with 35,233. Ajman recorded 30,228, while Sharjah reported 2,044, Fujairah had 772, and Umm Al Quwain registered 17.

In addition to jaywalking, a separate 18,073 violations were logged for pedestrians ignoring traffic signals, with Abu Dhabi again topping the list with 13,043 cases, followed by Dubai with 4,990.

Authorities have raised concerns about pedestrians using their phones while crossing roads, often failing to notice traffic signals or approaching vehicles. Although current laws do not specifically penalize mobile phone use while walking, the consequences of unsafe crossing can be severe.

Under the updated traffic law, any pedestrian who causes an accident while crossing from a non-designated area can face imprisonment or a fine ranging from Dh5,000 to Dh10,000. The law also prohibits pedestrians from crossing roads with speed limits exceeding 80 km/h, holding them accountable for civil or criminal liabilities in case of violations.
