The Philippines recorded a significant increase in HIV cases in the first quarter of 2025, with 5,101 new infections reported, according to the Department of Health (DOH). This surge highlights the ongoing public health challenge posed by the virus, particularly among young adults.
Of the newly reported cases, the majority were among individuals aged 25-34 years old, accounting for 2,491 cases (47%). Meanwhile, the 15-24 age group followed closely with 1,686 cases (33%), reflecting a troubling trend of infections among younger populations.
The report also revealed that 4,658 People Living with HIV (PLHIV) began receiving Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) during the same period, underscoring efforts to expand treatment access. However, the high number of new cases suggests the need for more aggressive prevention measures.
Despite these interventions, the country recorded 145 HIV-related deaths from January to March 2025, bringing the total death toll to 9,221 since the first reported case in 1984.
Health experts continue to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis, consistent treatment, and education campaigns to curb the rising trend of HIV infections in the country.
