UAE to build high-tech cancer center with advanced radiation treatment

Abu Dhabi is set to become a regional pioneer in cancer care with the upcoming construction of the Middle East’s first heavy ion therapy center at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. The advanced facility, developed by healthcare firm M42 in collaboration with Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation, was unveiled during Abu Dhabi Global Health Week 2025.

Planned for completion within the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi campus near the Fatima bint Mubarak Center, the facility will feature state-of-the-art technology designed to deliver highly targeted cancer treatment with greater accuracy and fewer side effects compared to conventional therapies. Heavy ion therapy is known for its ability to treat complex, resistant, or inoperable tumors, offering a powerful alternative where other treatments fall short.

With no similar facility within a five-hour flight radius of the UAE, the center will fill a major gap in the region’s advanced oncology services. It will include two treatment rooms—one with a rotating gantry and another with a fixed horizontal beam—equipped with cutting-edge irradiation technology.

Only 15 such centers exist globally, placing Abu Dhabi at the forefront of oncology innovation. The project also reinforces the city’s growing role as a medical destination, giving patients in the UAE and neighboring countries access to world-class cancer care without needing to travel abroad.
