Abu Dhabi authorities are tightening regulations on overcrowded housing, warning property owners and tenants that violations could lead to hefty fines of up to AED 1 million. The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has launched the Your Home, Your Responsibility campaign to curb over-occupancy and ensure compliance with residential regulations.
The initiative focuses on raising awareness among tenants and landlords about their responsibilities, emphasizing the need to register rental contracts through the Tawtheeq system and avoid unauthorized subletting. Tenants must also ensure their vehicles are correctly registered in designated Mawaqif parking zones.
As part of the crackdown, inspections have been intensified to identify violations. Non-compliance can result in fines ranging from AED 5,000 to AED 500,000, with repeat offenders facing penalties as high as AED 1 million. Additionally, landlords who fail to adhere to the rules risk having their Tawtheeq contracts and accounts suspended.
Authorities are urging landlords to provide proper accommodations for lower-income residents in approved housing facilities to prevent overcrowding.
