A progressive group has urged for increased representation of women in government, emphasizing their crucial role in advancing key laws that promote gender equality and protect women’s rights.
In a statement marking International Women’s Day, Akbayan Party-list highlighted how female lawmakers played a significant part in the passage of the Reproductive Health Law, Safe Spaces Act, and Expanded Maternity Leave Law.
“Filipino women have come a long way in fighting for their rights and equality. These landmark laws are the result of the courage and determination of women leaders who tirelessly worked for change,” the group said.
Akbayan called for systemic reforms to ensure women’s voices are included in policymaking and urged voters to support candidates who prioritize gender equality in the upcoming midterm elections.
“Despite the progress we’ve made, many challenges remain. More policies and laws must be pushed forward to guarantee a fair and just society for all,” the group added.
Currently, women remain underrepresented in Philippine politics, with only seven female senators out of 23 and just 32% of lawmakers in the House of Representatives being women.
Meanwhile, the Center for Trade Union and Human Rights pointed out that women workers continue to face discrimination, particularly in contractual labor arrangements where they are often denied maternity benefits. The group also highlighted that wage disparity remains a reality, with women earning less than their male counterparts despite already low wages across the workforce.
