UAE confirms Ramadan begins on March 1, 2024, using AI-powered drones for moonsighting

The UAE’s moonsighting committee has confirmed that the holy month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2024, following the sighting of the crescent moon. Today, Friday, marks the last day of Sha’ban.

For the first time, the country utilized artificial intelligence-powered drones to assist in spotting the moon, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of the traditional process. This technological advancement marks a significant step in modernizing the age-old practice of determining the start of the Islamic holy month.

Ramadan is a sacred time for Muslims worldwide, dedicated to fasting, prayer, and reflection. It is observed as a period of spiritual discipline, emphasizing self-restraint, generosity, and devotion to God. Fasting from dawn to sunset is a central practice, with the day beginning with Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and ending with Iftar (meal to break the fast).

During Ramadan in the UAE, businesses and schools may adjust their operating hours to accommodate fasting individuals. Non-Muslims are expected to be respectful of the customs by refraining from eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours. The month also brings an increase in charitable initiatives, community gatherings, and extended prayer sessions, including Taraweeh prayers held at mosques.

Authorities remind residents and visitors to observe the country’s Ramadan guidelines, including dressing modestly, maintaining respectful behavior, and avoiding loud music in public spaces. The spirit of Ramadan is centered on patience, kindness, and community, making it a deeply significant time for the UAE’s Muslim population.
