UAE to use AI-powered drones for Ramadan moon sighting for the first time

The UAE is set to introduce artificial intelligence-powered drones to assist in sighting the crescent moon, marking the beginning of Ramadan. This is the first time such advanced technology will be used for this purpose in the country, Gulf News reported.

The move is expected to improve the accuracy and efficiency of moon sighting, a tradition that plays a crucial role in determining the start of the Islamic holy month.

The Ramadan Crescent Moon Sighting Committee, overseen by the UAE Council for Fatwa, has called on residents to observe the moon on Friday evening, February 28, 2025, corresponding to 29 Sha’ban 1446 AH.

Those who witness the crescent moon are encouraged to report their sighting through designated hotlines or an online platform. By integrating AI, the initiative aims to provide more precise data and minimize discrepancies in confirming the start of Ramadan.
