Second disqualification case filed against Erwin Tulfo over citizenship, libel issues

A second petition seeking the disqualification of ACT-CIS Party-list Representative Erwin Tulfo from his senatorial bid has been submitted to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Filed on February 25 by Berteni Cataluña Causing and the Graft-Free Philippine Foundation, Inc., the new petition cites Tulfo’s previous libel conviction and questions about his U.S. citizenship. These concerns were similarly raised in 2022 when Tulfo was appointed as Secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The petition further claims Tulfo violated constitutional rules on equal access to public office, engaged in political dynasty practices, and failed to demonstrate the required academic qualifications and values of integrity and responsibility.

This follows an earlier disqualification case filed on February 3 against Erwin, his brother Ben Tulfo, and other Tulfo family members, alleging they represent a political dynasty, prohibited under the 1987 Constitution.

Responding to the new allegations, Erwin Tulfo stated that although he has not yet officially received the petition, he is fully prepared to address the issues raised. Tulfo recently defended himself publicly, pointing out the absence of a clear legal definition of political dynasties and stating he would support legislation to address the matter if elected.

Comelec expects to issue a decision on the initial disqualification case in March. Tulfo currently leads recent senatorial preference polls.
