Tourist dies after falling from Sri Lanka train while taking photo

A Russian tourist lost her life after falling from a moving train in Sri Lanka while attempting to take a photo.

The victim, identified as 53-year-old Olga Perminova, was traveling on the Podi Menike train, a popular scenic route between Colombo Fort and Badulla. According to Sri Lankan authorities, she had leaned out from the carriage when she struck a rock, causing her to fall off and sustain critical injuries.

The incident happened between the Badulla and Hali Ela railway stations. Perminova was given immediate medical attention but later succumbed to severe head injuries at the hospital.

She was traveling with a Russian tour group, and arrangements are being made to repatriate her remains. Reports indicate that Perminova, originally from Saratov, Russia, worked for a security company in Moscow and was a grandmother.

Her tragic death follows a similar incident in December 2024, when two women were killed at Anuradhapura New Town railway station while taking a selfie on the tracks.
