Dubai’s RTA introduces revamped abras with smart features and increased capacity

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has rolled out the fourth-generation traditional abras, marking a significant upgrade to the city’s marine transport system. The initiative aims to enhance commuter experience, integrate marine transit with other public transport modes, and promote Dubai as a top-tier tourist destination.

Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency, highlighted that the new abras have been redesigned to accommodate 24 passengers, up from the previous 20. The updated vessels comply with the Dubai Universal Design Code, ensuring accessibility and safety for all passengers, including people of determination. Other improvements include upgraded seating, better flooring, and a more efficient layout.

The new abras also feature smart technology enhancements such as real-time passenger information screens, digital destination boards, and advanced safety alerts. These additions align with RTA’s goal to boost marine transport ridership and improve connectivity within Dubai’s public transport system.

Beyond comfort and technology, the fourth-generation abras meet high security and environmental standards, with certifications confirming their compliance with Gulf Standard Specifications for maritime safety.
