Baguio confirms first case of mpox, health officials urge vigilance

Baguio City has confirmed its first case of mpox, a zoonotic disease that spreads through close physical contact, according to a GMA News report, citing the Health Services Office.

The patient, a 28-year-old male, was infected with the less severe Clade II mpox virus. He has since completed isolation and was declared fully recovered on January 17, 2025, as announced by the city health office on Sunday.

Mpox, unlike airborne diseases such as COVID-19, spreads primarily through direct contact with skin or mucosal lesions, respiratory secretions, or contaminated objects like bedding and clothing. Symptoms include fever, skin rash, swollen lymph nodes, and other flu-like signs.

Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong called on residents to adhere to health protocols, including wearing face masks, maintaining physical distancing, and ensuring proper ventilation, to prevent the disease’s spread.

As of December, the Philippines has recorded 52 cases of mpox, the Department of Health reported. The agency reminded the public to practice good hygiene and remain vigilant against the virus.
