President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Friday expressed support for Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile’s concerns about the Iglesia Ni Cristo’s (INC) “National Rally of Peace” and its connection to the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Marcos praised Enrile as one of the country’s top legal minds, agreeing with his warning that using the rally’s logic to justify constitutional actions like impeachment could set a harmful precedent. However, the President stressed that Congress is constitutionally obligated to handle impeachment complaints but added that the timing is not suitable.
“I don’t think now is the time to do that. And tutal, as a practical matter, papasok na tayo sa campaign period,” Marcos said in a One News PH report, pointing out that lawmakers will soon be busy campaigning, making it difficult to secure a quorum.
In a social media post, Enrile questioned whether a group like the INC could influence or override constitutional processes, emphasizing that impeachment is a legal mechanism for accountability based on evidence, not a punitive measure.
