Philippine president extends sympathy to victims of LA wildfire tragedy

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. extended his sympathies on Sunday to those impacted by the devastating wildfires currently ravaging Los Angeles, California, highlighting the significance of the affected areas as home to many Filipinos.

“On behalf of the Filipino people, I extend my deepest sympathies to all who have been affected by the devastating wildfires in Southern California, USA — a place that many of our kababayans call home,” President Marcos said in a statement. “May the community’s road to recovery begin with strength, compassion, and solidarity. Please stay safe and vigilant.”

The wildfires, which started on January 7, 2025, have already claimed at least 16 lives, displaced over 153,000 residents, and destroyed more than 12,000 structures across metropolitan Los Angeles. The infernos, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, continue to challenge containment efforts, with firefighters working tirelessly under hazardous conditions.

Authorities have issued mandatory evacuation orders for high-risk areas, including prominent neighborhoods such as Brentwood and Pacific Palisades. The fires have left not only physical destruction but also emotional scars for residents, many of whom have lost loved ones and livelihoods.
