The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced that a maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) for imported rice will be set at P58 per kilo, effective January 20, 2025. The initiative was revealed by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel on Friday.
“This MSRP aims to balance affordability for consumers and profitability for farmers and traders,” said Tiu Laurel in a statement. He stressed that the measure is crucial in ensuring fair pricing while deterring profiteering practices that could harm the nation.
Initially, the MSRP will be enforced in Metro Manila, with monthly reviews to consider global rice prices and other market factors. Tiu Laurel noted that prices could decrease after subsequent evaluations if international trends remain favorable.
The DA chief said the decision followed consultations with importers, retailers, industry stakeholders, and law enforcement agencies. He also highlighted the record rice import volume of 4.7 million metric tons in 2024, which he attributed to falling prices and reduced tariffs discouraging smuggling activities.
In addition to the MSRP, Tiu Laurel directed Food Terminals Inc. (FTI) to sell affordable rice through KADIWA ng Pangulo outlets. Prices include P45 per kilo for 5% broken rice, P40 for 25% broken, and P36 for 100% broken rice (Sulit Rice). Local government units in Metro Manila can also buy rice stored by the National Food Authority (NFA) at P38 per kilo to support community distribution programs.
“This move not only addresses consumer concerns but also helps clear NFA warehouses ahead of the harvest season,” Tiu Laurel added.
