Dubai doctors save 13-year-old boy’s vision after rare cricket ball eye injury

A 13-year-old Indian boy’s vision was recently saved after he sustained a severe eye injury while playing cricket in Dubai. The eighth-grader was struck in the left eye by a cricket ball, resulting in a Giant Retinal Tear—a rare but serious condition that, if untreated, could lead to retinal detachment and permanent vision loss. Thanks to the prompt care and expertise of the medical team at Aster Hospital Mankhool, his sight was successfully preserved.

Initially treated with an ice pack at home, the child’s symptoms of pain, redness, and blurry vision worsened, prompting his parents to visit Aster Clinic Bur Dubai. He was referred to Aster Hospital Mankhool, where Specialist Ophthalmologist Dr. Gazala Hasan Mansuri confirmed the diagnosis of a Giant Retinal Tear and multiple retinal breaks through advanced imaging techniques.

Dr. Gazala performed a 15-minute non-invasive laser treatment, using a 532 nm Green Laser to seal the tear and prevent retinal detachment. The procedure was carried out under topical anesthesia, ensuring the child’s comfort. He was discharged the same day, and follow-up care confirmed the successful healing of the retinal tears.

“Early diagnosis and prompt intervention are key when dealing with conditions like Giant Retinal Tears. Timely laser treatment was crucial in preventing retinal detachment and saving the child’s vision,” said Dr. Gazala. “I encourage parents to seek immediate care for any eye injury to avoid long-term complications.”

The child, now back in his home country, has fully regained his vision and resumed normal activities.
