Cooler weather arrives in UAE as winter officially starts on December 22

The UAE will officially welcome winter on December 22, 2024, with temperatures expected to drop to as low as 12°C in the coming weeks. According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), cooler weather will gradually set in as north-westerly winds bring cooler air masses across the region starting December 16.

Dr. Ahmed Habib, a climate expert from the NCM, highlighted in a Khaleej Times report that temperatures will decrease by 5-7°C, beginning in western areas before extending across the country. “Maximum temperatures will hover around 25-26°C, while minimums could dip to 12°C,” he said.

The cooler conditions will be accompanied by some rainfall and windy weather, with authorities already issuing alerts for fog formation, which could reduce visibility in certain areas.

Winter in the UAE is traditionally divided into two periods, “Arba in Al Merei” and “Arba in Al Aqrabi,” according to the Arabian Gulf calendar, with the former starting around December 28 and marked by intense cold and rainfall.

Dr. Habib noted that rainfall during the winter season depends on atmospheric conditions, emphasizing that dry winters have occurred in past years, including the 2023-24 season and 2001.

Residents are advised to prepare for the shift in weather by keeping warm clothing and umbrellas on hand as the country transitions to its colder months.
