The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has announced that Henna has been officially inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognition highlights Henna’s deep-rooted cultural significance in the UAE as both an ancient tradition and a cherished art form.
Historically, Henna was used as a medicinal plant to treat various ailments. Over time, it evolved into a symbol of beauty and creativity, with intricate patterns adorning women and girls during rituals and ceremonies.
The announcement follows the UAE’s participation in UNESCO’s 19th Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Asunción, Paraguay. The UAE delegation, led by Ambassador Ali Al Haj Al Ali, Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, played a pivotal role in securing this achievement.
This recognition of Henna marks the 16th cultural element inscribed on behalf of the UAE since falconry’s inclusion in 2010. Last year, the traditional dish Harees was added to the list, underscoring the UAE’s ongoing efforts to preserve and celebrate its rich heritage.
