The Bagong Katipunan ng Bayan (BAGKAT) marked its first Bonifacio Day celebration on November 30, 2024, in Dubai, creating a significant milestone for this modern movement inspired by the revolutionary ideals of Andres Bonifacio and the Katipunan. The event included an induction of founding members and officers, traditional ceremonies, and the unveiling of the organization’s ambitious plans to empower Filipinos worldwide.
This inaugural event went beyond commemorating Bonifacio’s legacy—it served as a rallying cry for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to unite, support one another, and carry forward the values of service (Paglilingkod), loyalty (Katapatan), and unity (Pagkakaisa).
Andres Bonifacio’s enduring legacy
Known as the “Father of the Philippine Revolution,” Andres Bonifacio established the Katipunan in 1892, sparking the fight for independence against Spanish colonial rule. His dedication to patriotism, equality, and collective action continues to inspire modern efforts like BAGKAT, which seeks to adapt his revolutionary spirit to address contemporary challenges faced by Filipinos abroad.
The birth of BAGKAT
Founded on July 7, 2024, coinciding with the Katipunan’s 132nd anniversary, BAGKAT aims to create a global support network for OFWs. With chapters in the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and other countries, the organization focuses on tackling issues such as cultural adaptation, exploitation, and homesickness through programs emphasizing empowerment, cultural preservation, and leadership development.
BAGKAT has partnered with the Filipino Institute to provide educational and training opportunities to its members. Benefits include a 15% discount on courses and access to headquarters in key locations across the Middle East, enabling members to participate in workshops and activities.
