Japan and several European countries are expected to hire at least 28,000 Filipino drivers over the next five years, according to the Overseas Labor Market Forum.
Japanese Labor Attaché Suzuki Yuki stated in a GMA News “24 Oras” report that Japan will require more than 24,000 taxi drivers and about 4,000 train operators, with monthly salaries ranging from PHP 58,000 to PHP 65,000. Applicants must obtain a language proficiency certificate and learn Nihongo.
Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Undersecretary Py Caunan emphasized that employers should cover all expenses, including language training, for workers.
Meanwhile, European nations like Slovenia, Austria, and the Czech Republic are in need of truck, bus, and taxi drivers, offering salaries from PHP 55,000 to PHP 142,000. Applicants must be proficient in English.
The Philippine Association of Service Exporters, Inc. (PASEI) pointed out that many Filipinos are not qualified for these opportunities. The organization recommended that the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) provide upskilling courses to address gaps in automation, vehicle types, and operational standards.
Taxi driver Rexon Noleal urged the government to offer free training programs to give more Filipinos a chance to qualify.
DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac stressed the importance of ensuring worker protection alongside job placement. “While there is demand for Filipino workers, we need to guarantee their safety and ethical employment practices,” he said.
The DMW is currently working with TESDA to address training and upskilling needs for aspiring applicants.
