NBI open to Ombudsman taking over investigation into VP Duterte’s kill remark

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has expressed readiness to cooperate if the Office of the Ombudsman decides to take over the probe into Vice President Sara Duterte’s controversial remark about ordering the killing of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago confirmed this during a press briefing, jokingly stating, “It would be better if they take over. Then we’ll be spared.”

Ombudsman Samuel Martires indicated in a GMA News report that his office could assume jurisdiction over the case if deemed appropriate. Martires explained that the Ombudsman is empowered to intervene in investigations conducted by government agencies at any stage, provided the matter falls under its authority.

However, Martires clarified that the Ombudsman would only investigate Duterte if the alleged threats were made as part of her official duties. For now, he stated there is no immediate need for action.

Justice Undersecretary Jesse Andres, who previously noted the Ombudsman’s authority to discipline high-ranking officials, declined to comment further but said the Department of Justice (DOJ) would respect the Ombudsman’s decision. He added that he had communicated directly with Martires to avoid discussing the matter through media.

Duterte was initially scheduled to appear before the NBI on Friday to clarify her statements but requested a rescheduling. The hearing has been moved to December 11. Meanwhile, a House panel investigating budget issues involving the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education postponed its own hearing to accommodate the NBI’s inquiry.
