Filipino martial artist-turned-producer redefines storytelling across mediums

A seasoned filmmaker, martial artist, author, and legal professional, June Daguiso has emerged as a transformative force in the entertainment industry. As the Founder and CEO of MJD Productions, Washington, DC International Film Festival (WMIFF), and Hollywood in Washington, DC talk show, he has dedicated over 18 years to crafting compelling narratives and inspiring audiences worldwide with his creative vision.

June’s journey began in 2006 when he founded MJD Productions, a platform that allowed him to share captivating stories with global audiences. His debut film, Full Circle, set the tone for his illustrious career, earning Grammy nominations for Best Song of the Year for TV & Visual Media and Best Compilation Album in TV & Visual Media. Collaborating with the talented Frank Cisco Anderson, this initial success paved the way for his subsequent achievements. In 2009, June’s film Collide earned another Grammy nomination, further solidifying his reputation as a creative powerhouse.

Beyond his filmmaking accolades, June has an extensive background in martial arts. Competing in the National Circuit under the North American Karate Association, he excelled in both fighting and form. His skill and discipline translated into a teaching role, where he trained aspiring martial artists in Tae Kwon Do across the DC-Maryland-Virginia area. Although he retired from teaching in 2000, the principles of martial arts—discipline, perseverance, and focus—remain integral to his creative endeavors.

“I’ve always believed in channeling my passions into something meaningful,” June shares. “Whether it’s martial arts, filmmaking, or writing, it’s about creating something that resonates with people.”

In addition to his artistic pursuits, June had a remarkable 38-year career in the legal field before retiring in 2017. Despite his demanding legal profession, his love for storytelling never wavered. Over the years, he has produced more than 50 films, taking on roles as a writer, producer, director, and actor.

June’s latest project, Saving Ana, has captured the attention of critics and audiences alike, earning nominations for this year’s Oscars in categories including Best Feature Film, Best Actor, and Best Original Song. His recent film, Lion of Judah Legacy, which he directed, shot, and edited, has also garnered recognition, advancing to the first round of the 2024 Golden Globe Awards.

Reflecting on his accomplishments, June remarks, “Recognition is always gratifying, but what truly drives me is the ability to tell stories that matter—stories that inspire and challenge perspectives.”

June’s creative portfolio continues to grow. He is currently working on four feature films, a TV series, and the reality show Filipina Housewives of DMV, which he co-produces with Imelda Antoc Bosley and Maribeth Murray Nicholas. His ability to juggle multiple projects is a testament to his relentless drive and boundless creativity.

As if his achievements in film and martial arts weren’t enough, June is also a prolific author. His literary works include 11 books, such as Saving Ana: The Road to Absolution, Trinity, Collide, and Diary of a Serial Killer. Each book reflects his knack for weaving compelling narratives that captivate readers. His titles span various genres, including suspense, drama, and stories highlighting the lives of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the United States.

June’s impact extends beyond entertainment. His projects often highlight human resilience and cultural identity, inspiring people from all walks of life. “For me, storytelling is not just about entertainment; it’s about connecting with people, shedding light on untold stories, and creating something meaningful,” he emphasizes.
