Jose Rizal’s rare ‘Josephine Sleeping’ sculpture expected to fetch P7 million at auction

A unique sculpture by national hero Jose Rizal, inspired by his wife Josephine Bracken, is set to be auctioned at Leon Gallery’s Kingly Treasures Auction on November 30. The piece, titled “Josephine Sleeping,” is one of Rizal’s last works, created during his exile in Dapitan. It is expected to fetch a starting price of P7 million.

Measuring 2.5 inches tall, 9.5 inches long, and 2.75 inches wide, the sculpture bears Rizal’s signature on its bottom left and comes from the collection of his sister Narcisa. The artwork captures Josephine resting on a Roman-style couch, partially draped in a blanket. As described by historian Leon Ma. Guerrero III in The First Filipino, “A hand modestly covers one breast, she half-smiles innocently in her sleep, tresses parted over her forehead,” symbolizing her as a mother, child, and wife.

Guerrero added that this sculpture is an intimate portrayal of Rizal’s affection, showcasing a softer side of the hero often associated with themes of strength and patriotism. “If Rizal can be said to have ever loved anyone else but the Filipino Nation, then it must be said that he loved Josephine,” he noted.

Alongside Rizal’s piece, notable works from celebrated artists such as Fernando Zobel, Carlos “Botong” Francisco, Benedicto Cabrera, Jose Joya, and Felix Hidalgo will also be featured. The auction includes an array of paintings by Fernando Amorsolo, such as “Rice Fields” and “Under the Mango Tree.”

The Kingly Treasures Auction will be held at Leon Gallery in Makati City at 2 p.m. on November 30.
