Senate President Escudero seeks to honor Juan Ponce Enrile for decades of public service

Senate President Francis Escudero has filed Senate Resolution No. 1223 to recognize and honor the lifelong contributions of former Senate president and current Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile. Escudero emphasized that Enrile’s dedication to public service spans multiple administrations and has significantly impacted the nation and its people.

“Manong Johnny not only exemplified excellence as a public servant but also captivated public interest, earning the reputation of being the ‘immortal Enrile’ for his resilience through various eras and significant world events,” Escudero said.

Enrile, now 100 years old, has served under eight different Philippine presidents, contributing to the successes of leaders ranging from President Marcos to President Rodrigo Duterte. His extensive career includes roles such as finance secretary, justice secretary, defense secretary, parliamentarian, senator, and congressman.

Escudero highlighted that Enrile’s contributions, including the pivotal role he played as defense minister during the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution alongside then-Armed Forces vice chief Fidel Ramos, cemented his legacy in Philippine history.

Despite his achievements, Enrile’s career was not without controversy, including implications in coup attempts against President Corazon Aquino and involvement in a plunder case related to pork barrel funds. Enrile and his aide, Gigi Reyes, were recently cleared of the charges connected to the misuse of public funds.
