10 newborns dead in hospital fire in India

A devastating fire at Maharani Lakshmibai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, has claimed the lives of 10 newborns, while 16 others fight for survival. The blaze, which authorities suspect was sparked by a malfunctioning oxygen concentrator, broke out at approximately 10:30 pm on Friday.

“Ten infants have sadly died,” Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak confirmed. Seven of the victims have been identified, while three remain unnamed. Hospital footage captured the aftermath, showing scorched beds and walls as distressed families waited outside, some in inconsolable grief. “My child has gone forever,” one mother mourned, her agony evident.

Police superintendent Gyanendra Kumar Singh reported that the rescued babies, only days old, are receiving medical care. “All children rescued are safe and getting medical attention,” Singh stated, adding that the investigation will determine the exact cause of the fire.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow, calling the deaths “heart-wrenching” and offering condolences on social media. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath pledged a compensation of 500,000 rupees ($5,900) to the families affected and directed authorities to expedite relief efforts. He wrote, “I pray to Lord Shri Ram to provide salvation to the departed souls and speedy recovery to the injured.”

This tragic incident follows another neonatal ward fire in New Delhi six months ago, which killed six infants and highlighted ongoing safety issues in healthcare facilities across India.
