Chelsea Manalo champions OFW families’ welfare in Miss Universe’s Voice for Change competition

Chelsea Manalo, Miss Universe Philippines 2024, is advocating for the families and children of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the Voice for Change competition at Miss Universe 2024. This initiative calls on all delegates to champion meaningful causes and inspire public engagement beyond the contest.

Highlighting her personal connection, Chelsea shared that she comes from a family of migrant workers—her father having worked as a seaman for 10 years. “Beyond their remittances and balikbayan boxes are stories of sacrifices, stories of families continuing to thrive despite the distance, time zones, and circumstances,” she emphasized.

Citing 2023 statistics from the Philippine Statistics Authority, Chelsea noted that approximately 2.16 million Filipinos were migrant workers, a figure that has nearly tripled in 2024. Her advocacy aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals focused on good health, quality education, and reducing inequalities.

Chelsea pointed out the struggles that children of OFWs face, which include feeling abandoned or neglected despite attempts to maintain contact with their parents. This, she said, can impact their education, mental health, and social development. “I made it my mission to show these kids that the realities of their family life, however challenging, should never hinder them from realizing their fullest potential,” she added, referencing programs by the Department of Migrant Workers and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

Her video appeal underscores that fostering a sense of community support can help young people feel understood and empowered. “When we look out for one another, we help the youth feel appreciated and understood, transforming their situations into collective experiences,” Chelsea concluded.

Chelsea’s participation in the Voice for Change round can bolster her path to the Miss Universe finals. Last year, Michelle Dee’s autism awareness advocacy earned her a Gold Winner title and a spot in the Top 10.

Currently, Chelsea stands 14th in the Voice for Change voting, with an opportunity to climb before the poll ends this week. Miss Universe 2024 will take place on November 16, where over 125 candidates will compete for the title. Should Chelsea succeed, she will join the ranks of Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, Pia Wurtzbach, and Catriona Gray as the country’s fifth Miss Universe.
