This international city’s thriving Filipino hip hop and rap scene has just gotten more exciting with the upcoming launch, by a budding artist, of a mind-blowing single that resonates with philosophical thoughts about existence.
Call it (thought-provokingly) deep, but 26-year-old Mitchelle Brynt R. Gulpo, who goes by the name of AMGDL (short for, and pronounced as, amygdala) in rap circles, said his latest composition, which has apparent Sanskrit influences, delves on the intricacies of man’s relationship with God.
AMGDL is a shortened form of the word amygdala, that almond-shaped part of the brain associated with fear, emotions, and motivation.
Indeed, an eclectic addition to Dubai’s burgeoning Pinoy music industry.
“The song’s title is ‘Anaadi Ananta,’ meaning, ‘no beginning and no end.’ I leave the song’s interpretation to the listener, who at first may think I was talking about my relationship with another person, but upon contemplation, will realize it’s actually about my connection with God,” said AMGDL.
Anaadi Ananta refers to an infinite entity that has always existed, which may also refer to consciousness, according to Vedan teachings.
The single was made under The Box Records, the first registered Filipino-owned music label in UAE.
AMGDL has been in the UAE rap scene for quite some time now, making a name for himself, with various collaboration with known Filipino rap icons such as Issa Loki and Ghetto Gecko.
He has also won numerous awards in local rap battles and competitions. AMGDL started doing rap music when he was 21. He was brought up in a household where hip hop music was a favorite.
