Cassius, the world’s largest captive crocodile, has died at a wildlife sanctuary on Green Island near Cairns, Australia. Estimated to be over 110 years old, Cassius measured 5.48 meters (18 feet) and weighed over a ton. He had been a prominent resident of the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat for more than 37 years, with caretakers sharing that his health had been declining since mid-October.
Originally from Australia’s Northern Territory, Cassius held the Guinness World Record as the largest crocodile in captivity since the death of Lolong, a 6.17-meter (20 feet 3 inches) crocodile from the Philippines, in 2013. The sanctuary shared a heartfelt tribute, highlighting Cassius’s extraordinary longevity and impact, saying, “Cassius will be deeply missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.”
