Filipina artist Rachel Ngan Dueñas recently made waves at the renowned Carrousel du Louvre art fair in Paris, showcasing her unique, tropical-inspired works from October 18-20, 2024. Dueñas’s participation, supported by Dhon dela Paz of Kwadro Pintura, marks a historic moment for Filipino art as her evocative pieces introduced the vibrancy of Filipino culture to an international audience.
Known for her lush and expressive style inspired by Philippine flora, Dueñas captivated art enthusiasts from across the globe with her approach to tropical impressionism. Her use of watercolor, an uncommon medium for such vivid and intricate scenes, was mistaken by some visitors for acrylic due to its impressive depth and vibrancy.
Among her pieces, a striking watercolor on black canvas drew particular attention, inviting viewers into an experience described as “painting in a state of blindness,” where depth and emotion seemed to transcend physical limitations. Visitors expressed profound admiration for her ability to capture complex emotions through color and form.
One international guest from Japan, eager to communicate his reaction, turned to a translation app and shared, “I feel spirituality in your work.”
Reflecting on the experience, Rachel expressed how representing her country in such an iconic venue felt like a dream: “I had some pre-show jitters being on a global stage, but when it was opening time, it felt like you were wearing your dreams. All you could do is enjoy everything because your dream felt bigger than your fear,” she said, grateful for the support of her family, friends, and fellow artists who cheered her on.
A day before the exhibit, Dueñas had the privilege of reconnecting with Philippine Ambassador Junever Mahilum-West, who had supported her artistic journey from the beginning. The Ambassador’s warm words about the nobility of art resonated deeply with Rachel, who expressed her curiosity about why the Ambassador had taken an interest in her career. Smiling, the Ambassador responded, “Perhaps it was our fate. I will see you tomorrow at the Louvre.”
Rachel’s debut on an international stage at the Carrousel du Louvre represents just the beginning of a bright future. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “My dream was to exhibit abroad, and my first international opportunity just happened to be at the Louvre. I think to put on your shoulder the responsibility of representing your country is a tough pressure to carry… I believe that there is always space for Filipino talent on a global stage.”
Following this milestone, Dueñas is set to continue sharing her art with the world, with her final show of the year scheduled in collaboration with Edya 1929 and Moda Interni at their showroom in Quezon City on November 28, 2024.
