Severe Tropical Storm Kristine has inflicted an estimated P3.4 billion in agricultural damages, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA). The storm destroyed 76,785 hectares of farmland, of which over 28,000 hectares are beyond recovery. Rice crops bore the brunt of the destruction, suffering P3.1 billion in losses, with a substantial 164,510 tons lost.
According to a PhilStar report, the DA assured farmers of financial support, while also noting significant losses in high-value crops and corn. Damage to irrigation facilities and other farm structures amounted to P69.36 million. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel confirmed that further assessments are underway, especially for rice fields that were 70% harvested before the storm.
Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has distributed nearly 200,000 food packs across Albay, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur to assist storm-affected residents. DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian noted that more deliveries are ongoing to support these areas.
Additional aid has come from Taiwan, with the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) receiving 500 tons of rice as part of a larger donation. MECO Chair Cheloy Garafil announced that portions of this rice will go to typhoon victims.
For those in the Bicol region whose homes were destroyed, the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) has allocated P15 million in cash assistance, offering up to P30,000 per family for rebuilding efforts.
