Death toll from Tropical Storm Kristine reaches 116

The death toll from Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, internationally named Trami, has risen to over 100, according to the latest update from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). As of October 28, 2024, 116 fatalities have been reported, with 10 confirmed and the remainder pending validation. In addition, 39 individuals remain missing, and 109 others have sustained injuries.

The storm impacted approximately 6.7 million individuals across 10,147 barangays, displacing 980,355 people, many of whom are now sheltered in over 6,000 evacuation centers. Kristine also caused extensive agricultural and infrastructure damage, amounting to P2.5 billion and P1.5 billion, respectively. Across the nation, 3,004 houses were completely destroyed, and over 41,000 suffered partial damage.

Transportation infrastructure suffered as well, with 676 roads and 96 bridges rendered impassable. Meanwhile, 160 cities and municipalities have been declared under a state of calamity, prompting school and work suspensions in affected areas.

In response to the extensive damage, government agencies have distributed over P658.7 million in aid to those affected.
