Jaywalkers in UAE to face fines up to Dh10,000 or jail time for traffic accidents

The UAE government has introduced strict penalties for jaywalking as part of its efforts to enhance road safety. Under the new federal traffic regulations, which will come into effect on March 29, 2025, jaywalkers who cause a traffic accident by crossing from non-designated areas will face imprisonment or a fine ranging from Dh5,000 to Dh10,000.

According to a Khaleej Times report, more severe penalties apply for crossing roads with speed limits of 80km/h or higher, where offenders may be sentenced to at least three months in prison or fined not less than Dh10,000.

These measures are part of a broader crackdown on dangerous driving behavior, including driving under the influence of narcotics or alcohol, which can result in fines up to Dh200,000 and the suspension or cancellation of driving licenses for repeat offenders.
