From Mindanao to Dubai: OFW charts success story in insurance sector

Heather Hannilore Cordova’s journey from the verdant landscapes of Mindanao to the bustling heart of Dubai paints a vivid picture of ambition, tenacity, and the Filipino spirit of endurance.

Now 39, and thriving as an Insurance Advisor at Orient Insurance Al Futtaim, Heather’s expedition in the UAE is filled with stories of both challenges and celebrations.

Having started her Dubai sojourn in 2018, Heather initially worked as a Manager at Icelab. The subsequent years saw her working for various firms, but it was her role at an insurance company that redefined her path.

“One of the highlights of my career was when I began working in insurance. It ignited a passion within me, urging me to be the best version of myself,” Heather remisces.

When asked about her reason for moving abroad, her answer is simple and poignant: “To start a journey on my own independently.”

A past laden with service and compassion

Back in the Philippines, Heather played a pivotal role as a specialist and trainer in a pharmaceutical company. Beyond the corporate world, her spirit of service shone bright.

“I volunteered with the Red Cross, providing psychological First Aid to disaster-impacted clients,” she reveals.

In her current role, Heather finds joy in connecting with people, emphasizing the crucial role insurance plays in safeguarding one’s financial future.

“I’m passionate about sharing and educating others on the importance of insurance. I’ve experienced firsthand how insurance can be a financial lifeline during times of sickness and accidents,” she adds.

Trials and triumphs in Dubai

Heather’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Despite working with notable companies, she faced financial hardships due to delayed salaries and company shutdowns.

This led her to undertake various part-time jobs, from cleaning villas to serving as a bus assistant.

“These challenges made me realize that hard work will never betray you,” Heather states emphatically.

“God rewards perseverance and effort at the right time.”

While Heather’s immediate plan is to continue her dedication to her profession, she harbors dreams of launching her own business.

To fellow Filipinos facing challenges abroad, the OFW offers words of encouragement: “Never give up looking for ways to earn money. Remember that hard work will never betray us. Live each day purposefully, chasing the dreams you hold dear.”
