Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla is set to assume his new role as the secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Tuesday, according to his brother, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla.
Asked about the appointment, the justice secretary confirmed, “I think so,” and added that the governor’s oath-taking was scheduled for the following morning. “In fact, I think he’s withdrawing from candidacy as we speak,” he said during a chance interview.
Governor Jonvic Remulla, however, deferred to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for an official announcement.
The position became vacant after former Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos resigned to file his candidacy for the Senate. The appointment of Jonvic Remulla is seen as a significant development, with his brother highlighting potential improvements in the justice system due to the strong coordination between the DILG and the Department of Justice (DOJ).
“The commitments can be made instantly because the two of us can always talk about what has to be done. Mas maganda ang coordination niyan,” said Justice Secretary Remulla, referring to the Justice Sector Coordinating Council, which involves the DILG, DOJ, and Supreme Court.
He further emphasized that this collaboration could lead to faster training for police and prosecutors, ultimately improving the justice system. “We would be able to accelerate the training of police and prosecutors so the regime of justice will reign supreme,” he said.
