Dubai commuters can now carry foldable e-scooters on Metro and Tram

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Friday that foldable e-scooters without seats will now be allowed on the Metro and Tram, following a set of new guidelines. These e-scooters, which must weigh no more than 20kg and fit within the size limit of 120cm x 70cm x 40cm, can be carried during all operational hours.

The RTA outlined several rules for commuters bringing foldable e-scooters onboard. Riders are prohibited from charging e-scooters inside the Metro or Tram premises, and the devices must be folded at all times while in stations, platforms, or on board. Riders are also responsible for ensuring that e-scooters do not obstruct doors, seats, aisles, or emergency equipment.

In addition, e-scooters must be clean and dry, and any parts that could cause injury, such as handlebars or pedals, must be covered or retracted. Other key rules include the prohibition of damaged or dual batteries, ensuring batteries meet international safety standards, and using wide gates for entry and exit at Metro stations.

The move comes after a ban on e-scooters inside the Metro and Tram was enforced on March 1 for passenger safety. This new update reintroduces foldable e-scooters under strict conditions to ensure safe commuting.
