The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) announced that they are preparing an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, according to a report by GMA News on Thursday.
Bayan Chairperson Teddy Casiño revealed that the complaint will be ready by November, coinciding with the reopening of the Congress session. “Sponsor” lawmakers are expected to push the complaint forward at that time.
Although the group has not disclosed the specific grounds for the impeachment, they denied that the move is politically motivated.
GMA News is still awaiting Vice President Duterte’s statement. However, she has previously mentioned that certain members of the House of Representatives were plotting to impeach her, citing House Deputy Minority Leader France Castro as one of the key figures in the effort.
Castro, a representative of the ACT Teachers party-list, dismissed Duterte’s accusations, calling the vice president “delusional.” She also denied any coordination with Senator Risa Hontiveros and former senator Antonio Trillanes IV, whom Duterte had mentioned in connection to the impeachment talk.
In response to Bayan’s plan, House Speaker Martin Romualdez commented, “We have to look at whatever comes before us,” clarifying that there is currently no such complaint in their radar.
The controversy around Vice President Duterte intensified after she refused to attend congressional hearings related to her office’s use of confidential funds.
