Fil-Am nurse murder suspect pleads not guilty as supporters rally for justice

Filipino-American nurse murder suspect Bryce Schubert pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and second-degree abuse of a corpse in an Oregon courtroom on Monday. Schubert, 27, is accused of killing 32-year-old nurse Melissa Jubane, whose remains were discovered two days after she was reported missing on September 4.

According to an ABS-CBN News report, Schubert appeared via video from the Washington County Jail, where he is being held without bail. The courtroom was filled with supporters of Jubane, a beloved figure in the Filipino-American community.

Jubane’s friend, Ken Crebillo, who met her at Portland State University’s Filipino club “Kaibigan,” described the emotional toll her death has taken on those who knew her. “For many of us, we’re feeling everything from sadness to anger,” said Crebillo. “She was a center of gravity for so many people.”

Jubane, a newlywed who married in Hawaii in August, was reported missing when she failed to show up for work. Her remains were found shortly after Schubert, who lived in the same apartment building, was arrested. Although both were nurses, they did not work at the same hospital.

The motive behind the crime remains unclear, and prosecutors have yet to release further details. Schubert’s next court appearance is scheduled for October 15.

“We’re here for the long haul,” Crebillo added, expressing the community’s commitment to seeking justice for Jubane.
