Can the Philippines achieve Dubai’s success? OFWs in Dubai reflect on Jessica Soho’s statement

The latest episode of “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho” has sparked a discussion among Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Dubai. The episode, which explores Dubai’s transformation from a desert to a first-world city, includes a statement from Jessica Soho expressing hope that the Philippines can achieve similar progress.

In the episode, Soho remarked, “It took them only about 5 decades para gawin ang lahat ng ito, at ngayon first world na sila. Nakakainggit nga lang… Kasi kung nagawa nila, sana magawa rin natin.” She highlighted Dubai’s rapid development and ambition, describing the city not just as an icon but also as a symbol of the Emiratis’ high aspirations.

This statement has resonated with many OFWs in Dubai, sparking a range of reactions about the potential for similar progress in the Philippines. Many OFWs shared their thoughts on social media, reflecting on the challenges and opportunities for their home country.

Several OFWs pointed out that corruption is a significant barrier to the Philippines achieving similar progress. One commenter stated, “When corruption is gone in the Philippines and the government really wanna improve the well-being of every Filipino, then we can definitely be a top country! It’s just that a lot of politicians keep getting greedier and greedier.”

Another echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for integrity in leadership: “We need honest leaders and government workers! So that people will follow, knowing they will be punished if they disobey the law.”

Another OFW pointed out the importance of leadership quality and governance structure: “Kung ang mamuno sa bansa katulad ni Digong, siguro may pag-asa pa ang Pinas. Hindi uunlad ang bansa natin kasi lahat magaling, walang disiplina, ayaw pa disiplinahin, lahat kurakot.” This comment reflects a call for stronger leadership and discipline similar to that seen in Dubai.

Admiration for Dubai’s governance and discipline

Many OFWs admire Dubai’s governance, attributing its success to good leadership and effective governance. One commented, “It is because of good governance, dignity, and moral values that makes UAE the best country to live in. The government does their best to keep people feel safe and comfortable. A loving country full of humility and peace.” Another noted, “Because the leaders here are visionary and transparent. No corruption, no red tape. All for the people.”

The contrast in governance styles between Dubai and the Philippines was also highlighted by another OFW who explained, “The form of government in UAE is a Federal Elective Monarchy… kung anong batas ang inapproved, yun ang ipapalaganap sa buong UAE. Ang Pinas is a unitary state under the presidential and democratic constitution Republic… in short maraming kontra bulate, corrupt, at TradPol dyan sa Pinas kaya ang bagal ng asenso!”

Several OFWs also emphasized the importance of discipline and respect for the law in Dubai’s success.

“Because people in Dubai, whether locals or expats, know how to respect their leaders and follow the rules! Filipinos and expats here follow rules as well, afraid of being deported,” one commenter observed.

Another added, “Dubai is very beautiful and one of the safest countries. Worked there for 16 years. Missing Dubai a lot. Happy country!”

A call for cooperation and unity

In response to Soho’s hope for the Philippines, some OFWs called for unity and cooperation between leaders and the people. “Our system is corrupt, yes, but both leaders and the people must cooperate together!”
