Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has advanced to the Olympic gold medal bout after a decisive victory over Janjaem Suwannapheng in the semi-finals held in Paris. The welterweight contender’s journey to the final has been marked by controversy following her disqualification from last year’s World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) over gender eligibility tests.
In a match held at the repurposed Court Philippe Chatrier, Khelif secured a unanimous decision win, backed by enthusiastic support from the crowd. This victory marks a significant comeback for Khelif, who was previously knocked out in the quarter-finals at the Tokyo Olympics.
Khelif, who will face China’s Liu Yang in the gold-medal bout, expressed her determination to win Algeria’s first boxing gold medal. “I am focused and here to perform my best. I will give everything for the final,” said the 25-year-old boxer.
Her journey at the Games began with a swift victory over Angela Carini, lasting just 46 seconds, which sparked debates about her eligibility. Despite the IBA’s disqualification, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has permitted Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting to compete, affirming their status as women based on their passports.
The IOC’s support contrasts with the IBA’s chaotic handling of the issue, which included conflicting statements from IBA officials. As Khelif prepares for the final, her performance and the IOC’s stance underscore ongoing discussions about gender eligibility in sports.
Khelif’s victory has already guaranteed her a bronze medal, with the gold medal bout set for Friday. Lin Yu-ting will compete in her semi-final match in the 57kg category on Wednesday.
