Starting in September, Filipinos residing in Taiwan will be the first to benefit from a new online system for renewing driver’s licenses, introduced by the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
“We hope to fully implement this within the year,” said Atty. Vigor Mendoza II, LTO chief in a Top Gear report.
“Once fully implemented, this will be a significant help to all our clients, especially OFWs, as they no longer need to visit our offices or wait until they return to the Philippines to renew their driver’s licenses.”
This initiative is a collaboration between the LTO and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). The agreement, signed in June, aims to extend this service to overseas Filipino workers and other Filipinos in the Middle East, Europe, the United States, and other regions with substantial Filipino populations.
“It provides a convenient means for them to renew their driver’s licenses without physically appearing at an LTO office, relieving them of the burden of additional travel and time,” said DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac.
Currently, OFWs and Filipinos abroad can renew their licenses via the LTMS Online Portal, which has specific application types for users with either an expired Philippine driver’s license or a foreign driver’s license. However, they must visit an LTO branch within 30 days of returning to the Philippines for medical checks and data capturing to receive their new driver’s license card.
