Filipino expat wins National Champion title at 2024 Aeropress Competition in Oman

A Filipino expatriate in Oman has been named the National Champion at the 2024 Aeropress Competition. With this win, Aaron Barredo will represent Oman at the World Aeropress Championship set to take place on September 20, 2024, in Lisbon, Portugal.

Barredo’s journey into the world of coffee began with humble beginnings. At 27 years old, he recalls starting his career at a petrol station at the age of 16 before moving to McDonald’s to support his family through financial hardships.

“I started my career in a petrol station, then moved to McDonald’s to support my family due to financial problems. My mom was an OFW in Qatar, and we are four siblings,” he shared with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Despite holding a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation, Barredo discovered his true calling in the hospitality industry. In 2020, he relocated to Oman and began working as a confectioner, making donuts.

“I found out that I belong to the hospitality industry. In 2020, I moved to Oman and started as a confectioner making donuts. After six months, I was promoted to a junior barista,” he said.

His passion for coffee grew, and within a year, he competed in the Horeca Latte Art Competition, securing third place despite being a newcomer.

Currently, Barredo works as a Barista Trainer and Quality Control at Crown Muscat International. Reflecting on his recent victory, he described his feelings as “overwhelming happiness.”

Barredo’s inspiration to participate in the Aeropress Competition came from his family and friends.

“My family and friends never failed to support me,” he stated. He attributes his success to the patience, discipline, and continuous learning from his journey.

“Winning is equivalent to the patience, discipline, and continuous learning from failures that I’ve had from my journey,” he emphasized.

Looking ahead to the World Aeropress Championship, Barredo expressed his excitement about representing Oman on the world stage and meeting other champions from around the globe. He is also proud to represent the Filipino community.

“Of course, I’m carrying our flag as a Filipino Brewer, and I will do my best to win in the World Aeropress Championship,” he declared.

Barredo’s achievement has been supported by his family and friends, whom he credits for empowering him throughout his journey.

“I wouldn’t be able to win this wonderful fight if I didn’t have people who empowered me. Thanks to my family and friends who believed and supported me from the beginning,” he said.

Balancing his passion for coffee with other aspects of his life has been seamless for Barredo.

“When you love what you’re doing, everything is balanced because you are happy and excited every day,” he explained.

Barredo hopes his victory will inspire other Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) around the world.

“This achievement is for us. Be proud as a Filipino. This trophy that I got is for you guys as well, and I’m so proud to be an OFW!” he shared.
