Sheikh Hamdan appointed UAE’s new Minister of Defence and Deputy Prime Minister

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, has been appointed as the UAE’s new Minister of Defence and will also serve as Deputy Prime Minister. This major appointment was announced on Sunday, July 14, as part of several changes to the federal government by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Sheikh Mohammed, who consulted with UAE President HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the decision, praised his son in a post on X, describing him as a beloved leader who is committed to the people. “We have confidence that he will be a great addition to the UAE government and a major contributor to shaping the country’s future,” the post stated.

Other key appointments include Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan being named Deputy Prime Minister while continuing his role as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Awar, the current Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, will additionally serve as the acting Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Sarah Al Amiri has been appointed as the UAE’s new Minister of Education, succeeding Ahmed Belhoul, who will now serve as the Minister of Sports. Alia Abdullah Al Mazroui has been appointed as the Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, focusing on creating economic opportunities for Emiratis. Additionally, the Council for Education and Human Resources has been expanded to include the Ministry of Community Development.
