Dubai has announced the approval of an integrated rain drainage network project named ‘Tasreef,’ which will significantly enhance the emirate’s ability to manage rainwater. The Dh30-billion initiative, revealed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, aims to increase the capacity of Dubai’s drainage system by 700%.
Construction of the project is set to begin immediately and is expected to be completed by 2033. ‘Tasreef’ will cover all areas of Dubai, with the capability to handle over 20 million cubic meters of water per day. Designed to serve the city for the next hundred years, this project will be the largest rainwater collection network in the region.
The project continues previous drainage efforts initiated in 2019, which included developments in the Expo Dubai area, Al Maktoum International Airport City, and Jebel Ali. The announcement follows heavy rains that recently affected the UAE, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure to cope with climate change and increased rainfall.
‘Tasreef’ will utilize advanced Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), the largest in the Middle East, known for their efficiency and precision, to adapt to various topographical conditions and ensure the project’s success.
