Two passengers from Dubai arrested for smuggling gold at Indian airport

Two Indian nationals arriving from Dubai were arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle 1430 grams of gold, as confirmed by Delhi Customs on Tuesday.

The passengers were intercepted by Customs officials upon their arrival and were taken into custody under the Customs Act of 1962. The seized gold is estimated to be worth Rs. 91.44 lakh (approximately Dh403,374).

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

This arrest follows a previous incident on May 27, where Delhi Customs seized 2814 grams of gold valued at Rs. 1.92 crore (Dh846,962) from five Uzbek nationals arriving from Dubai via Mumbai. All five passengers are currently under arrest.

The World Gold Council (WGC) reported a 33% increase in gold smuggling in India in 2022, attributing the rise to an increase in import duty from 7.5% to 12.5%.
