A 22-year-old Filipina student has achieved an exceptional academic milestone by graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Dubai, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Communication Engineering.
Her graduation ceremony took place on May 7, 2024.
Reflecting on her academic journey, Jerez shared with The Global Filipino Magazine, “I began my bachelor’s degree during the pandemic, a period of significant adjustment to an online setup. Despite these challenges, my academic journey was beautifully orchestrated by the author of life, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
The young engineer emphasized the spiritual foundation that underpinned her academic success: “My journey is rooted in faith and prayers. I clung to the great promises of God and walked by faith, supported by actions in alignment with my prayers.”
Jerez’s path wasn’t without its hurdles. She recounted one of her significant challenges during her studies: “A major challenge I faced was when my previous university announced its sudden closure. This required transferring to a new university, which felt like starting over. But during this uncertainty, the Lord reassured me, turning what seemed like a setback into a stepping stone to greater opportunities at the University of Dubai.”
Selected as the graduation speaker, Jerez felt a profound sense of joy and responsibility.
“Receiving the email that I had been chosen as the graduation speaker was overwhelming. Tears of joy flowed as I thanked the Lord,” she recalled.
During her speech, she emphasized the importance of humility and divine trust: “The message I aimed to convey to my fellow graduates centered on putting God first and trusting in His plan. This approach ensures everything falls into place and works in our favor.”
Throughout her academic career, Jerez has learned several key lessons that she believes are crucial for both personal and professional success.
“Committing everything to the Lord leads to a triumphant journey. Showing compassion, integrity, and humility is just as important as academic excellence,” she explained.
Additionally, Jerez emphasized the importance of community and health: “The quality of the community around you significantly impacts who you become. Also, balancing hard work with self-care, including proper diet and sleep, is essential.”
In her message to other Filipino students both locally and internationally, Jerez hopes to be a source of inspiration: “With God, all things are possible. You are designed for greatness and success. It’s important to embrace this belief and step confidently into the great future God has planned for you,” she stated, referencing Jeremiah 29:11 to underline God’s promise of hope and a future.
Looking ahead, Jerez aspires to make a difference globally.
“I aim to contribute to the development of the Philippines, the UAE, and the broader world. Professionally, I want to showcase the excellent workmanship Filipinos can offer,” she said.
On a personal level, she plans to give back to her supportive family and church community, and inspire younger generations to pursue their dreams without limitations.
